October Blur...

This picture is how I felt pretty much the entire October. We had general conference, fall break, Arizona State Fair, Temple Open House, Halloween and a lot more! Here is pretty much our month.

Kindergarten Field Trip - The Phoenix Zoo!

Last month, Thomas brought home his paperwork for his upcoming field trip to the zoo.  This year for the first time they were going to allow younger siblings to come as well.  Best yet...Adults only needed to pay $2 and children under 2 were FREE!  I could not pass up this opportunity.  Especially when it is normally $20 for adults!!!!

Today was the big day.  Since younger siblings could not ride the bus, we met them at the zoo.  Thomas had prepped his sister as much as he could as to the animals they would see, and what would happen.  He even explained that he had to have a "buddy" and that Rustin was going to come with them.  I just love watching Thomas interact with Rebecca.  He has this tender heart when he talks to her.  I know it won't always be that way, so I am trying to hold onto these moments.

A Zoo-tastick Day!

I need to begin with last night. We laid Thomas down (for the third time) at 10:30 last night. Thomas was telling me something when Jonathan popped up and said, "Mom...I need to throw up." How old do kids need to be before they run to the toilet? I grabbed the cup that the boys had near their sink and got it there just in time for Jonathan to throw up. I called for John's help. Not thinking very well at the time I said, "John, I need your help. Please bring a cup." Apparently, because of my convesational tone John did not interpret my request as an emergency. As he casually approached the bedroom to find out why in the world I would need a cup as I was putting Thomas down, he came around the corner and saw Jonathan heaving. Fortunately, he grabbed a large bowl.

Poor Jonathan got the flu bug. No fever, just threw up throughout the night. He is doing much better today.

Today was our annual trip to the Phoenix Zoo. With John's MBA, they have an annual family day at the zoo. It comes with admission, lunch and tram ride. With Jonathan sick, and John being up with him throughout the night, they both stayed home. Besides being exhausted, John hoped to get some school work done. We had invited John's brother Chris and his family, but his wife Amber had to work with her dad. As a result of Jonathan, John, and Amber not going; we had three extra tickets. We called my sister and were able to take my three nephews with us.

(Sidenote - John said that poor Jonathan was so bored at home. Unfortunately, we were not only going to go to the Zoo as a family, but were headed to Jonathan's Scout-a-rama afterwards. Jonathan wanted to go still claiming he wasn't sick any more. However, John had to explain that despite not throwing up, he was still contagious. What a bad day for Jonathan.)

Of course there had to be a race that blocked off the main roads to the zoo. I had to go the backway. We got our wrist bands, maps and I had four navigators. Since two of my nephews had never been to the zoo, I wanted to make sure they saw all the animals that they could. We started off at the reptile and amphibian center. Thomas does NOT like snakes. Frogs were ok, but still iffy. We saw golden eagles, condors, Mexican Wolf and a lot of other desert animals.

From there we went to the giraffes. The boys climbed up the stairs to get a better look at the African Savannah. Thomas was sad I would not let him up. There was not a place to park strollers.

We went to get lunch. Since it is catered by the zoo, it is more gourmet for adults than for kids. They had hamburgers, hot dogs (Costco size), BBQ chicken, fruit and pasta salads. Making sure the 5 boys all had what they wanted was a little challenging, but no one went away hungry. Koda (Kody told me he wanted to be called Koda from now on.) was thrilled to be eating in Ruby's house. Ruby was an elephant that lived at the zoo for years. Her keeper noticed that she would pick up sticks and draw in the dirt. They got her a paint brush and paints and she painted pictures. Ruby died in 1998, but they dedicated a house to her and put her artwork up in it.

I had the boys tell me what animals they wanted to make sure they saw. That way we would not miss any. After lunch we went to ride the tram. We had horrible luck with the tram. We got there just as it was full. The boys were excited though that they could pick where they would sit. We sat in the first two rows and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited...the driver came and said, "Do I have a thumbs up to leave?" and he did not. Apparently some meercats got out of their cage and were running around. After 30 minutes they switched us to another tram and we took a different tour of the zoo.

We went to the monkey village, the petting zoo, and saw every animal the boys wanted to see. We had some fun along the way too. It was the longest that we had stayed there. We did not leave until 3:30. Poor Jonathan called me 3-4 times wanting to know how much longer we were going to be out. We ended with the boys playing at the tree house. That has always been my boys favorite part. It is an actual tree house with a creek running underneath. Thomas was right in there with the older boys.

It was a great day. Here are some memories I will keep:

Koda - Don't kill the bee! Bees are part of nature and I LOVE NATURE!

Aunt Sarah - Dustin, you need to wash your face. Your beans colored outside the mouth lines.
Dustin - I got it. (He then proceeded to lick around his mouth not getting anywhere near where he needed to.)

Taylor - This day has been great! Let's go to the zoo again next Saturday mom! Hey, do you want to come Kody?

Davin - I know these animals have to be in here. Help me look harder.

Thomas - Ma...Hmmmmmm...Look.....Hmmmmm (Hmmmmm = Elephants)

Koda - This is one of the best days of my life.

Here are pictures from the day:

All the Monkey's Aren't in the Zoo

Today was a great day for our family. With John's MBA program, they have two events during the year that are for families. These events are also for alumni. One is in February where we go to Fiddlesticks, and then in November to the Phoenix Zoo. Today was the day to the zoo! The day started off though with Jonathan's tooth hanging by a thread. Mom yanked it out much to his dismay. He liked grossing out his dad by having it just sitting there. Then it was time to give the boys haircuts. Thomas was sleeping though, so he did not get his around his ears... We went to the zoo. Here is a nice "before" shot. We let Jonathan bring his bicycle to ride. He did this two years ago when we went with Uncle Steven. Jonathan did well, so we let him bring it again. The first thing we did was noticed that they were feeding the elephants in ten minutes. We went over and they handed out carrots to all the kids to throw to the elephants. Taylor missed the edge to where the carrot needed to be thrown, but Jonathan was able to make it into the elephant area. The zookeeper said not to worry about not making it in though. They only had Asian elephants at the zoo. The youngest one was 36 years old and the oldest was 47. Dad was able to help the boys by lifting them up to throw their carrots. From here we went and ate lunch which was provided by the school. John was able to see some of his classmates there, and it was nice to reconnect with them. Included in the pass was the tram ride. We decided to go on this ride next to "let our tummies settle" as Taylor says. Thomas was drenched from drinking water out of my glass at the lunch. We brought a glass of ice with us, and John had not finished his lemonade. He gave Thomas some of his lemonade and Thomas did not know what to think of that. He finished the cup though and it made a good toy for him to play with. The boys were so excited to see the animals. They both wanted to see only one animal while we were there. I bet you will never guess what it is though (unless you watch Go Diego, Go). They wanted to see a jaguar. So here are some shots from the tram ride:

Most of the animals were hidden, so we were not able to get very good pictures of them.
We got off before the last stop and went to the Farm area. The boys had fun playing on the tractors. Thomas was almost at the end of his rope, but held on a little longer for his brothers- We found this really cool area where you can either pretend to be that animal, or feel what they are like. Jonathan and Taylor thought it was VERY COOL.

We FINALLY made it to the jaguars, and he was taking a NAP!

By this time, Thomas was sleeping, and the boys had not gone and played at the tree house yet. It is something they look forward to each time they have been to the zoo. John and I were so tired, it was all we could do to not fall asleep!

We made our way back to the van and did not need to carry anyone! I don't think John could have if he wanted to..

Tonight I went to Target again. After reading on some of the Target boards they were getting the M&M individual packets for 14 cents. Sure enough, with the $1.00 off coupon that is how much they were. Starting Monday they will be free with the coupon, because they will be 57 cents. You need to check how many ounces the package is though, because the coupon is only good for 11 ounces or more.
